for your use will depend to a great extent on what you are looking for.

top quality search engine that uses patented technology called page rank to
ensure that search results are accurate and relevant for your search.
AltaVista search engine that returns pretty good results. AltaVista has recently underwent
a fairly large re vamp and has altered it's search algo. So far it is looking
good.
Open
Directory Project The largest human edited directory currently online. The
ODP currently lists over three million pages in it's index.
Yahoo!
claims to be the first large scale directory of the internet. Over a million
pages in the index and uses Google as a back up search provider.
Gigablast
New search engine that could be in for good things in the future. They appear to
have a very large index and good algo. Their results are pretty clean and accurate.
Alltheweb
Very large search engine that some argue provides the best results. All the web
is owned and operated by fast
Sootle
Very new search engine offering a quite a large index combined with an easy to
use interface.
