Kid safety on the internet
The internet is a great educational resource for children but
it is also a very dangerous place for them to be allowed to go alone.
Imagine the internet as a street. The street is full of
strangers. "Don't let kids talk to strangers."
It is always best to supervise then whilst they are
online. There is software that is designed to make the web safer by not allowing
access to certain websites, but all in all the best approach is to watch over
them.
By nature kids are curious, most people also notice that
kids pick up using a computer really easily, This can be a dangerous
combination. They will surf around looking for whatever interests them. The sad
fact is that some unrepeatable websites prey on this by luring kids on to their
sites.
Without a doubt the biggest danger kids will experience
when online is chat rooms.
If you allow your child to use a chat room or any form of
instant messaging service you really need to supervise. Chat rooms are dangerous
places for kids.
In the majority of cases when using a chat room you are
talking to total strangers. There are certain chat places that are designed for
this sort of situation. They are moderated and do not allow for private messages
between users. Even in this situation it is always best to be very cautious and
supervise at all times.
Don't allow your
child to give out contact details in a chat room.
